- Cotton
- Silk
- Jute
- Synthetic
Fabrics are made of yarns and yarns are further made of Fibres.
Types of Fibers:

Natural Fibres: We obtain Fibres from plants or animals. These fibres are called natural fibres. Natural fibers are further of two types. The fibres obtained from plans are called Plant Fibres. Some of the examples of plant fibres are Cotton, Jute and Viscose. Fibres like wool and silk are obtained from animals and are called animal fibres.
Synthetic Fibres: Fibres made from chemical substances are called synthetics fibres. Polyster, nylon, acrylics are some of the examples of synthetics.
Cotton Fibres:

Cotton plants usually grow at warm places with black soil. The fruits of the cotton plants are of the size of a lemon. After maturing the bolls burst open and the seeds covered with cotton fibres can be seen. Fibres are then separated from seeds by combing. This process is known as ginning. Ginning can be done by hands or machines.
Jute Fibres:

Jute is obtained from the stem of the jute plants. Jute plants are cultivated during rainy season, mainly found in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam.
These plants are harvested and immersed in water for several days. The stems rot and then the fibres can be seperated by hand.
Wool Fibres:

Wool is obtained from the fleece of sheep and goat. It is also obtained from the hair of rabbits, camel and yak.
Silk Fibres:

Silk is obtained from the cocoons of the silkworm.
Fibres to Yarn:
To make fabrics fibres are first converted to yarn. The process of converting fibres to yarn is called spinning.
Spinning:

In this process the fibres form a from a moss are drawn out and twisted. This brings the fibres together to form yarn.
The devices used for spinning are Takli or Charkha.
Yarn to Fabrics:
There are multiple ways by which fabrics are made from yarn. The two main processes are weaving and knitting.
Weaving:

The process of arranging two sets of yarns together to make a fabric is called weaving.
Knitting:

In this process a single yarn is used to make a piece of fabric.

History of Clothing Material:
In earlier days people used the bark of the trees, big leaves or animal skin to cover themselves. Gradually man learnt to weave mats from grass and twigs. Then animal fleece and hair were twisted together to form long strands and these were woven into fabrics. With the invention of needle humans began to stitch clothes.
